Why do you shop?

While I'm on hiatus traveling the wilds of Southeast Asia, this guest post is brought to you by my good friend and fellow blogger, the *newly engaged* Well-Heeled!

They say you should never go to a grocery store when you are hungry. I say you should never go to a mall or open a shopping website when you are bored. I speak from experience, I've noticed that I tend to spend the most when I head to stores or click on online websites when I'm bored, feeling down, or just passing time.

Slowly, though I am changing my habits. I am not immune to the allure of new J.Crew cardigans or Tahari suits, but I've tried to stop going to the malls or stores unless I was looking for something in particular. That's when I realized: shopping shouldn't be a form of default entertainment for me.

That doesn't mean I don't enjoy reading fashion blogs or that I have sworn off buying new things. I especially like petite-focused blogs such as Style PintCurls & Pearls, and Clothed Much.  I still wander into TJ Maxx or Loehmann's when I need to replace an old purse or a pair of shoes. I still look at BodenUSA and wish that their gorgeous Soho jacket goes on sale.

The biggest difference, however, is that shopping has become more of an activity with a purpose (e.g. I need to find a gray dress to add to my office wardrobe) instead of a form of default entertainment when I have no other plans. The end result is that clothing takes up a smaller portion of my spending, and shopping takes less of my time, and that I am wearing the clothes I have much more often.

Is shopping a form of entertainment for you?

  1. Sometimes I feel like shopping is a form of entertainment, but other times I can think of it as a chore. When I lived in the city, my roommate and I would quite often go peruse the mall for something to do. Lately, I've avoided shopping just for something to do. I do still enjoy shopping though, I just think about what I'm doing a little more.

  2. I love the thrill of getting a good deal when I shop, whether its using my extra care bux at CVS or getting an extra discount at Macys. That thrill/adrenaline rush is pretty addictive, so I know I need to keep that under control or else I'll buy the whole store.

  3. Used to be a form of entertainment. No more!

LOL! I can't afford to entertain myself that way anymore. Now I shop only because I have to.
